Zombie Dead
It's a traditional straight-to-video zombie flick. Nothing imaginative, no genre twists. The running time's minimal and the budget's minimal. Half the cast never acted in any other films, but the story's scenes are so simple that that doesn't usually matter. The rudimentary plot is mostly just 60 minutes of physical danger.
I really liked it.
It's old-school and creates atmosphere. We're trapped in a creepy hospital with an unsettling, discordant soundtrack. Can we get out? There are doors to the outside, yes, but they're guarded by people in contamination suits who'll send you back towards the zombies. We know almost nothing about anyone... but that's okay, because the characters don't know anything about themselves. Their memories have been wiped. We only know what we can see and hear, i.e. corridors painted hospital green and the moans and footsteps of the things that shamble there.
There aren't many zombies, but that's okay. Even a single zombie is threatening if you're empty-handed and in your pyjamas. These zombies can also run, but their behaviour and effectiveness are all over the place. One of the scariest scenes, for me, was one where the main zombie just stood there doing nothing and didn't attack.
Genre awareness is patchy. Our heroine (Satomi) doesn't have a clue about zombies, e.g. putting her hand to the face of someone who died after having being bitten. (She's closing the corpse's eyes, which is ostensibly a normal thing to do.) The hospital's other inmates know more than her, but might do things that don't make sense. Zombie victims, for instance, shouldn't just be wrapped in cloth and left in a spare room. First, decapitate them. Or break their legs. Or something. Also, one character clearly isn't sane.
Sometimes, the film's ewww. Retrieving broken glass with your bare feet? Urgh. Beating a zombie to death with a pipe? That takes longer than you'd think and is not pretty. Also, why didn't the other zombie do anything during all that? The answer, I suppose, must be "nothing because it's very stupid and got confused".
There's an evil reason for everything, which was horrible and satisfying.
This one's genuinely good. Super-cheap, of course. Bargain basement straight-to-video. Nonetheless, this is why people make zombie films, despite the uncountable thousands of other zombie films, which are often terrible. Even after all this time, the genre can still work if you take it seriously, like this. It's scary.
