It's about lesbians and their relationships, sometimes with men. No organised crime, no yakuza and no external threat at all. Everything's domestic and intimate, albeit also sometimes steamy.
Ayano Jinguuji (Aika Yamagishi) is the daughter of a wealthy family. She has a husband, but the marriage was chosen by her father and the relationship isn't physical. As a student, she was in love with a woman called Akemi Shirai (Natsumi Tadano). Also, she has a maid called Hisayo (Waka Misono) who used to work in the sex industry, in a lesbian club where she was always ranked in the top three.
To be honest, all the lesbian stuff isn't particularly memorable. Women fancy each other? Yeah, great, good luck. My best wishes to everyone. They all seem happy enough and comfortable with their orientation, so there's no real dramatic tension. Sometimes they visit lesbian clubs and talk to barmaids, but that doesn't qualify as "interesting". What makes the film more startling is the story role it allows a couple of men, because you'd assume they'd be redundant wallflowers and a waste of narrative space. Surprisingly, no. One of our heroines has a fiance. For now, at least, if no one changes their mind. Another male is an amiable old codger who visits hostess clubs and intimately gets to know a girl who works there.
How will all this play out? Will a girl end up pregnant and coupled with a bloke? Will another commit murder in the bath and then cold-bloodedly make a two-faced call to the emergency services?
To be honest, I wasn't that bothered by this film. Paradoxically, it's a lesbian movie where the lesbians aren't particularly interesting and it's only their relationships with men that bring the film alive. (Don't expect all of those to end well.) It's okay, though. If you're into steamy lesbian drama, go for it. It's certainly more accessible to a general audience than a lot of Daisuke Yamanouchi's output, so imdb has heard of it. (That's not true of a lot of his films.) However, it's definitely kinky, e.g. someone naked who's wrapped in plastic, blindfolded and masturbating. See also the gross sweat/fluid collection by an old man, who then drinks from the glass. Or the female-on-male rape potential of encasing someone in plastic.
"Do you like women?"
"No."
"Then why work in this place?"
"Because men don't come here."
