New Game of JouOu 4 2016
The first thing we see is Kizuna Sakura, so does that mean she survived the previous film? No, it's not that simple. I think she's playing a different character. Last time: Mikayo. This time: Mikase, who's never worked as a kyabajou before and certainly isn't a veteran of the Red Dragon club. Is this just Daisuke Yamanouchi reusing an actor, or are we meant to give it some kind of narrative meaning? Might we even have seen both Mikayo and Mikase last time? That might explain a lot. It's definitely the same fictional universe, anyway, featuring the Red Dragon Club, ongoing characters and even a mention of Chizuru.
The film's perfectly okay, but to be honest the last two I watched were stronger. Kizuna Sakura's Mikase is a less compelling protagonist than Iori Kogawa's Chizuru, partly because she spends so much of the film staying out of the action and looking for jobs outside the Red Dragon club. She gets scouted, but she's reluctant. Kizuna Sakura is a bit bland and hamster-like, to be honest, and is certainly never as intimidating as Iori Kogawa could be.
Mind you, she meets bad situations. An interviewer asks if she has a boyfriend, then complains about hiring girls who get pregnant. He then asks if she uses condoms during sex? Bloody hell. You'd expect any interviewer like that to be fired on the spot. (Then, later, he shags her and doesn't use a condom himself, even though she asks him to use one. He didn't bother bringing any.)
The girls at the club are still bitchy and dangerous. They're possessive about their regular customers and it's a big deal if one girl swipes another's man. Some sleep with customers, while others worry about being left behind if they don't too. Steal another girl's bloke and it won't be pretty. Two girls take another to a rough prostitution gig and don't let her leave when she realises. Soon afterwards, they're taking gleeful close-up photos of the victim having sex with the men, before one gets out a cutter knife. Was that revenge for sleeping with another girl's customer? Yes, I think it was.
For a while, I thought these Red Dragon clubs might have less nudity (but more cleavage) than most Daisuke Yamanouchi films. I was proved wrong, though, by the sleaze boost from the aforementioned scene.
This isn't a bad film. It has all the usual elements you'd expect from Daisuke Yamanouchi and this setting. Scary girls who go too far in protecting their territory. A finale with stabbing and "it was adjudged suicide by the police". However, narrative momentum is lacking, because Kizuna Sakura's Mikase feels passive and is mostly sidelined from the Red Dragon Club action.
