Whoops, I bought volume 2 instead of volume 1. That's not a problem, though, because this volume has no plot and I hated its exceedingly stupid first few chapters. I won't need to catch up, either going forwards or backwards. Later chapters improved, but only to the level of "I suppose I'll keep reading" without actually being good.
Minoru Soramoto is a schoolboy whose parents disappeared, leaving him with the kind of debt that leads to gangsters harvesting your internal organs. Fortunately, his neighbour, Shiori Kanemochi, saved him. Now, he's living in her house. (I only know this thanks to Google, because that premise is really just an excuse to shove the characters together and wasn't mentioned in volume 2. I'm not expecting it to have any further narrative impact.) Anyway, Shiori idolises Minoru, would do anything for him and would spend all her money on him. She's aroused by the smell of his laundry. That bad opening chapter has her throwing a tantrum because she wanted to see him wearing every combination of his school uniforms. She'd be his stalker if they weren't already living in the same house. She's an absurd joke character and this manga is stupid.
That said, though, there are redeeming features.
1. It's not sleazy. Shiori is buxom, but her default outfit is practically armour-plated and this volume's idea of fanservice is extremely tame. No one makes a sexual move and Shiori would probably be horrified by the idea. She sees Minoru as cuteness personified and perfection itself, being unaware of her own heavy breathing tendencies. She's modest. She's not targeting him. The manga's also aware of the age gap, making any hypothetical hanky-panky a criminal offence.
2. It can be funny. Shiori's attempts to say Minoru's name are amusing.
3. The manga's full of 4-page mini-stories. This makes it throwaway and bitty... but if you're finding something annoying, something else will be along in a moment.
4. The 10-year-old who talks like the Japanese Ambassador is a refreshing change of pace, although it took me a while to accept her speech mode. (Her parents are police officers.)
5. Shiori and Minoru are thoroughly nice.
It's nonsense. Minoru wraps his hand in clingfilm to practise touching Shiori's hand without getting her overexcited. She's even worse when she's drunk. I immediately hated this volume... but by the time I'd finished it, I thought it was sort of okay if you're in the mood for something silly.
