Aa Ikkenya Pro Wrestle
It's a wrestling movie. I don't mean an action-horror film that happens to star wrestlers like Battle Girl: The Living Dead in Tokyo Bay, but instead an actual story about wrestling. That's what the plot's about. It also stars wrestlers. The hero is Shinya Hashimoto, who sadly died the year after of a brain aneurysm, aged only 40. He's basically door-shaped. Imagine a cube of human flesh.
When Hashimoto whale-jumps off a balcony onto a group of brawlers, he falls three or four times from different angles. Because it looks cool. It's that kind of film. It's total nonsense, but at least it knows it.
There's a plot. TV people want Hashimoto to fight surreal loonies who've been known to fight to the death. TV people are evil. I know that now because this film told me. We also learn that the correct way of cheering up someone who's depressed is expose your breasts and bite him. (You'll get a reaction, anyway.) An explosion destroys our hero's house and rebuilding it would take him 70 years to pay off. What does he do? He starts rebuilding.
His wife is fatally injured, but she gets better. She also catches a disease that turns you into a mermaid. (No, not a zombie mermaid. The English title is a lie and the original title contains neither word.) Mind you, the mermaid prosthetics are quite impressive as the wife starts peeling off her own skin. However, one of the Evil Loonie Wrestlers is a zombie, which is how this film got into my Japanese zombie movie marathon. (It tag-teams with a human, throttles Hashimoto with its own intestines and is a bit alarming when about to commit self-harm.)
This isn't a film that requires undivided attention. I woke up for the mermaid wife's scenes, but as for the rest... well, it's pro-wrestling, isn't it? Lots of macho shouting and testosterone. They fight. They're giving it everything and probably having fun. I've nothing against it, though, and I know this kind of thing has its fans. If you're looking for quality filmmaking that you can take seriously, don't even consider watching this film. Zombie fans can give it a miss too. Wrestling fans, though, will probably have a laugh.
