Midnight Cinderella
It's a lovable pink film that I enjoyed. Nanami Matsumoto plays Mahiru, a bespectacled computer programmer who's plain, shy and can't find a boyfriend. One day, though, a god of death lets her transform into a beautiful sexpot and pick up men!
Matsumoto's rather good. I like her as an actress. She's not afraid to discard dignity, look frumpy and pull extreme faces. For example, the film starts with her in Halloween zombie make-up that startles her postman. She made me laugh with her fantasy reactions to that bouncer at the nightclub. She can also come across as down to earth and straightforward even when naked, dead and talking to a ridiculous death god in a jester's outfit. She carries the film surprisingly well and I enjoyed watching her. The only problem is that she's cuter and more appealing in those thick nerd spectacles than when she's removed them in her supposedly beautiful form. (For what it's worth, Matsumoto started as a gravure idol in 2015, switching to adult video in 2017 because she wasn't doing well in the pin-up world.)
Mahiru's sex-mad friend with an ego is played by Kimito Ayumi (another porn star). She's amusing too.
The plot's charming. Mahiru's looking for her Destined One, who we soon realise must be that postman. He's lovely, timid and likes her as a person. The film makes a joke out of their mutual failure to realise the inevitable (until the sex scene finale, of course). This film is silly, e.g. conspicuous jiggling, or a "boing" sound when Matsumoto's jumper gets pulled up to show her bra. However, there's a shocking story development when someone uploads a sex video of her to the internet without permission. Bloody hell. After that, though, the film takes the subsequent confrontation in gentler and more whimsical directions than you'd expect, again taking likeable choices.
It's nice and it had at least two sequels. You could even call it heartwarming. It's a shame Matsumoto didn't make more non-porn movies.
