CAVEAT: all this is just one random volume. I didn't even start at the beginning. That's what I'd normally do, but the bookshop I was in had nothing earlier than volume 6. Take my comments here with an even bigger pinch of salt than usual!
It's yet another messed-up take on the magical girl genre, but at least it's not another Dark Magical Girl series where everyone dies or gets tortured or whatever. Instead, everyone's appalling. Our schoolgirl heroine, Kayo Maiiba, smokes like a chimney, belches like a buffalo, doesn't care how she sits in a short skirt, swears the air blue and is organising violence with her freshly recruited mob of somewhat pathetic thugs.
I lost patience with her. Amusingly, she's the pampered princess of her rich family and has a butler at her beck and call... but that's the opposite of a mitigating factor.
It's sleazy, albeit without nipples. (I'll never understand that. It's like inviting meat-eating friends to an all-you-can-eat barbecue without mentioning that all the food's vegan. It's not as if Japan doesn't also sell far more explicit manga. My best guess is that it came from censorship in TV anime, after which manga started unthinkingly doing the same.) Anyway, Kayo Maiiba keeps her clothes on but doesn't care about panty shots. Her nicer friend, Nako Shisai, has big boobs and a magical girl costume that could almost be what she was wearing five years ago when she was flat as a board. The arrogant American magical girl, Annabelle, has enormous boobs and a similarly outrageous outfit until a wardrobe malfunction leaves her nude. Furthermore, gods don't wear clothes, unless you count a string. (We see those deities a lot, especially the buxom blonde goddess with Lady Godiva hair.)
Frankly, it's most readable in the magical girl battles. Which is a condemnation in itself. I didn't really gave a damn about anyone here when they were standing around talking, except in the classroom when Anabelle's still being nice and the amusing background classmates have wandered in from a far more genteel manga. Once the fights begin, though, Annabelle vs. Nako is brutal enough for Dark Magical Girls, then Kayo's arrival is quite fun while also suggesting depths to her character. (She'd never admit for a moment that she had a softer side, though.)
This manga has been translated into English and is available from Seven Seas. The art's good, especially when going all-out to make Kayo look trashy and horrifying. There are potentially good jokes, but they didn't work for me (except the well-bred classmates who don't see anything wrong). I liked Nako, but that's because she's a retreat from the series premise back towards traditionally nice magical girl territory.
Unless you're trash-diving, I wouldn't bother with this. It's not even as funny as it probably thinks it is.
