Kimi to Sekai ga Owaru Hi ni 3
SEASON THREE
It's the show's second-weakest season (after Season 5). That said, though, it's still a strong show that plays for keeps and has a memorable cast of bastards. I enjoyed it. I'd even recommend it. Nonetheless, there were times (especially in episode 21) when I was saying "idiot" at the screen.
1. One character has a baby. The father is the toughest, most dedicated, most wholehearted guy in the world and he'd do anything to protect the mother and baby. He's lovely. You couldn't ask for someone better at your side during a zombie apocalypse. However, Mum tells Dad that the baby died and that she never wants to see him again, even though she has a scary terminal condition and will soon consider blowing her brains out. What's her plan for the baby, eh? Let it starve to death? She certainly doesn't hate her child... she just hasn't thought things through. (She's not stupid, by the way, and is in fact a trained, highly intelligent professional.)
2. Two people had sex, then afterwards went all dispassionate and cold about it. That didn't happen! We're not a couple! They give each other the cold shoulder thereafter and say things like "never let me see your face again"... then one's in floods of tears after SPOILER, when it's too late. Idiots.
3. The hero has serious judgement issues in episode 18.
4. Macho dicks are in hot competition for the Moron Prize, although we've been seeing that throughout the series.
It's good stuff apart from the stupidity, though. We meet two new groups. 1 = a religious group with insane secrets. You don't want to know what they understand by "maris". They also have a disgusting theory about building up immunity to the zombie virus. It's clever and I can see the logic, but you wouldn't want to be the guinea pig who tried it. I would have called these people "terrifying", but that word is better applied to... 2 = a group of predatory killers who like nothing better than slitting throats. Breathing or undead, it's all the same. Their scariest psychopath has to be stopped from murdering someone useful he'd already been ordered once not to kill. There's a funny moment when that chap has a "More Macho Than You" disagreement with someone almost as bad as him, because their voices go so deep that it's almost parody.
I like the script choices with the religious leader. We see multiple sides of him. He can be sympathetic, or even genuinely heroic. He can deliver dialogue and ask questions that are amusingly ironic. Ultimately, though, he's a dangerous nutter who founded a batshit crazy cult.
There will be a bloodbath. You'll see how cool it is for unlikely people to get their hands on a gun and blow away their enemies. There's a somewhat contrived and deeply twisted culmination for the romantic thread that's been running since Season 1. It's strong stuff. Grim, but that's what you'd expect from a zombie apocalypse series.
NYUUMON-HEN
This, on the other hand, is funny. It made me laugh. A "Zombie Hunter" (self-proclaimed) can hardly manage one dead grandad who's been shuffling towards him slowly. He's a ridiculous dork. Our heroes can hardly believe him. Together, everyone finds a colony of party people, who probably won't last for long because this is a one-off special.
Things get dark, of course. We meet another legendary scumbag who earns one of my favourite ever zombie chompings. One of the regulars gets to be particularly cool when putting an arrow through someone's head. Everyone nearly dies... which is fun. This episode's charming, as is our pathetic "Zombie Hunter". He's lovely and made me laugh, e.g. being unable to take a handshake from an actual tough guy. Even if you're not planning to watch the whole show, you could easily look for its specials and watch them on their own. They work as standalones. This particular one might be a keeper.
