It's Season 2, but it aired back-to-back with Season 1. (To be precise, they overlapped. Season 2 ep.1 was released on the same day as Season 1 ep.10.) Together, they're a 16-episode run.
Here's the full episode list:
- SEASON ONE (10 episodes) = 17 January to 21 March 2021
- SEASON TWO (6 episodes) = 21 March to 25 April 2021
- "TOKUBETSU-HEN" SPECIAL (movie-length but half of that's recapping Seasons 1-2) = 25 February 2022
- SEASON THREE (6 episodes) = 25 February to 1 April 2022
- SEASON FOUR (6 episodes) + "NYUUMON-HEN" SPECIAL (bonus episode) = 19 March 2023
- "FINAL" MOVIE (115 minutes) = 26 January 2024
- SEASON FIVE (5 episodes) = set during the "FINAL" movie, but released afterwards on 9 February 2024
The zombies (or "golems") are no longer the real problem. We're told that they're increasing, but anyone who's still alive probably has a safe refuge and/or significant fighting strength. This season brings together those two categories. Our heroes can fight. One zombie on its own they can handle easily. See it, kill it. The problem is personalities, including a man with a gun and anger management issues. The rational action is probably to murder him in his sleep, but heaven help anyone who tries and fails. Also, our heroes aren't quite that ruthless (yet).
Also, there's a shelter called "House of Hope". Its inhabitants have never killed a zombie and they don't get on with violence. Instead, they have rules. Lots of rules. Also, a lack of flexibility in implementing them. Let's suppose that a heavily pregnant woman's just been bitten by a zombie. Should you try to deliver her baby? No, says the shelter's leader, because it's too dangerous... so is he scared of new-born babies? Even if it's a zombie, it's helpless. It won't have many teeth, for a start. Furthermore, this show has a medical basis for its zombie infection and so it's conceivable that such a baby could have immunity and help develop a vaccine.
There's still that romantic angle. SPOILER gets amnesia, which half of me wants to call a cheap reset button... but okay. It has a story justification. There's weird zombie infection stuff going on. Also, there's a little bit of sexual activity and at least one HOLY SHIT twist.
Which character will you hate the most? Mr Armed-And-Irritable, or that man in the shelter who bullies others with discriminatory rules? Compared with them, I'm almost tolerant of the mystery psycho who likes carving crosses into zombies, then releasing them. So he tortures the undead? That makes him a sick puppy, sure, but at least he never tells anyone that they're wrong or dangerous simply for disagreeing with him.
There are tough guys. There are ordinary folks who have to find a way to live with difficult people. There's a bad world, waiting to smash through your defences and inflict a massacre. What's worse, zombies or bad people? Frankly, zombies are less scary. Those peace-lovers in the shelter are in for a surprise or two.
Then there's the special.
This is largely a recap episode of Season 1-2 flashbacks, but it also has a chunky framing story. Two of our heroes hit the road and do lots of the zombie-killing we've been waiting for all season. They're an ill-matched duo, but that makes them cool. They find some yakuza in a hospital. (One briefly tries to throw his weight around, but our heroes hardly notice because they've seen so much worse than him.) This is quite a good one-off episode, with surprising medical discoveries (an infected bloke who might have immunity?) and yet another scumbag who's arguably worse than the undead. His fate I enjoyed. Then, finally, we glimpse some religious freaks as a teaser for Season 3.
I'm still enjoying this show. I was also right about the plot developing, with a much bigger storyline than any single movie could tell. Looking forward to Season 3.
