"In the last days of the Tokugawa regime, to protect Kyoto, the Shinsengumi was established. Ronin who gathered under imperialism and isolationism massacred each other on a daily basis, turning the city into a sea of blood. [...] A strategy against the Emperor was hatched and a secret message was delivered to the Shinsengumi. You want us, the Hiryu clan, to steal this secret letter."

In other words, boring people will be trying to kill each other. There will be sword fights. There will be female ninja and a hardcore porn star in the cast (Hitomi Shiraishi, who later become a scriptwriter). There will be a topless woman whose breasts stick upwards when she falls on her back, i.e. ninja were getting silicon implants in the 1860s. I didn't care. I wanted everyone dead.

The nearest we get to characterisation is usually discussing whether it's okay to leave your comrades to die. Only two people here aren't cardboard cutouts. One's the girl who's still sexually obsessed with her samurai boyfriend even after he's been decapitated, while the other is a Shinsengumi bloke who authorises gang rape. (Even his subordinate thinks that's a bit much.)

There's some supernatural content. A monk can make purple slime crawl up a naked woman (not sure what that had to do with anything), raise the dead and create zombie samurai. Even they're boring. They don't bite or infect anyone. They use swords. They could just as well have been golems or robots, although the green grinning severed head is a distinctive touch. Meanwhile, a ninja has psychic powers. "I've always hated this blood that runs through me." "Your blood... you absorb our sisters that die. Boss, everyone is alive inside of you. Just like Kikyou said, you are the Hiryu clan's last hope." We later learn that she can fire laser blasts from her sword and kill zombies, but only when she's become the last survivor. "Only when all of my sisters are dead can I use this sad magic. I let everyone die."

I couldn't summon even a shred of interest in this one. Watch it if you like J-sleaze and samurai.
