I bought this at random, without knowing it's had
a 2023 anime adaptation. (The manga ran for 12 volumes from 2019-2023.) I'm sure I'll enjoy the anime, but I don't imagine I'll need to buy all the manga too. It's clear and straightforward. I don't imagine the anime is significantly different. This volume only has two significant characters, although I'm sure more will arrive later and even here we learn that they have siblings.
1. SHIRAISHI has so little presence that even automatic doors might not open for him. His teachers and classmates ignore him. He occasionally looks like a yokai, with big eyes and an angular head, but he's more reasonable and intelligent than a lot of socially handicapped anime/manga protagonists. He merely gives the impression of someone attending his own funeral.
2. KUBO is a droopy-eyed, dozy-looking girl who can see Shiraishi and enjoys gently teasing him. Interestingly, she's shy and modest by nature, e.g. when being teased by her big sister. She can look almost depressed when she's on her own, just getting ready for school. Shiraishi brightens her up. He's safe to flirt with and the world's easiest person to tease.
They're obviously going to end up together. This is a romantic comedy. That's set in stone. If the mangaka had wanted even the slightest flicker of doubt, she should have given them more of a supporting cast. I like them, though, and I'm quite looking forward to the anime.
