Another Kokkuri-san movie where the protagonist's played by Mariya Suzuki? Do they think we're masochists? In fairness, though, she's improved massively in the three years since
Kokkuri-san: Gekijou-ban and will no longer make you laugh in derision. She's still a movie-killer, but now more subtly. She's not carrying the film. It only occurred to me quite late that "hang on, isn't Mariya Suzuki the protagonist?" She's playing a wallflower with no personality... or at least that's how she comes across. Good lead actors hold your attention and make their scenes memorable. Mariya's a walking void.
She's also unlikeable, but in fairness so is everyone else. Our "sod off and die" heroes are:
1. EIKO (Rika Kikuchi) and KEIKO (Yukari Torikai) = loud, grating bitches who talk non-stop at a hundred miles a minute and make all your decisions for you, whether you like it or not. Listening to you? Letting you get a word in edgeways? Not a chance. They bulldoze their friends into doing the Kokkuri-san ritual (here called Angel-sama) and they're even aware that its dangerous not to dispose of the materials properly afterwards... but do they do the job themselves? Nope. They shove the work on to their two victims and disappear. Result (spoiler): everyone dies.
2. SAKI (Momoko Kaechi from idol group GIRL< S >ACTRY, according to both the movie poster and the end credits) = lets herself get pushed into confessing to a boy, Yoshikawa... and then immediately gets jealous and threatening towards her friend Mari. She repeatedly orders Mari to keep her hands off Yoshikawa, when Mari had had no such intention. This becomes absurd when Mari admits that she didn't properly dispose of the Kokkuri-summoning materials, i.e. she's killed them all.
MARI = "Everything might be my fault. I didn't properly throw away the paper and pencil for Angel-sama."
SAKI = "I knew it. Why? Why didn't you throw it away? Because you also liked Yoshikawa senpai!? Is that why!?"
What a moron.
3. MARI (Mariya Suzuki from idol groups AKB48 and SNH48, according to both the movie poster and the end credits) = gets given one job on which everyone's lives depend... and doesn't do it. Furthermore, a girl in their class (Yuna) knows about Kokkuri-san and has been saying since the beginning that it's dangerous. Later, after the scary accidents have begun, Yuna tries to help again... and Mari gives her the brush-off, calling her "gross" and "annoying". When Mari becomes the last survivor of the four, though, she returns to Yuna as if they'd been best friends all along.
4. YOSHIKAWA (Seiya Konishi) = he's a knob. After accepting Saki's love confession, he'll start hitting on Mari.
5. YUNA (Mao Kanjo) = the only one here with a brain, but even she can be shockingly petty. After three girls have met gruesome accidents and Mari's begging for her life, Yuna responds with "no" because they'd been rude to her. She later amends it to "if you grovel at my feet".
6. ANGEL-SAMA (killer spirit) = we eventually hear him speak, briefly... and he's childish too. Murdering schoolgirls because they didn't destroy a piece of paper? Could J-horror spectres please grow up?
I have no interest in these people. The film's ending fails because your response to their deaths will only be "yes, and?" In fairness, though, Mariya Suzuki's acting had improved so much in the three years since
Kokkuri-san: Gekijou-ban that I could imagine her since reaching the not-displayed-here heights of "not incompetent". (If she had, though, I'd have expected her to have had an acting career. Which she hasn't. You can even tell she can't act from this movie's poster.)
