"I'm Mayuko Arisugawa. I recently decided to stop being exploited by everyone like a machine. I feel bad for the real machines if that's what it's like! And these are my lovely sisters in arms. The always stylish and academically successful Izumi Moriyama and the always upbeat girl who loves to eat, Usagi Hanao. The three of us, using the power of mysterious pendants, formed a corps that repairs broken machines that have been thrown away. It's a great job, isn't it?"
That's the opening narration, but it contains peculiarities. When Mayuko says "repairing machines", we see naked girls having sex with a motorbike. That's repair? Really? Licking it and straddling it? Also, letting a boy called Tsutomu learn their secret apparently means they perform sex acts on him. Why? I don't get it. It can't be blackmail. They haven't been doing anything bad, have they? (Tsutomu himself seems like an ordinary nerd.)
Finally, Mayuko's idea of "not exploited" permits sex work (albeit of a magical repairing kind), so what had she been doing previously?
This isn't a show you're meant to think about, though. It's a comedy hentai version of Saiyuki, aka. the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. Or, as I'll always think of it, the 1978 Japanese TV show that I watched in the BBC dubbed version that aired in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Certain bits look exactly like my memories of that show, although that's because they're common in all versions (Tripitaka's outfit, Monkey's flying cloud and headband). It's a perfect gender swap from the 1978 show (which itself had gender-flipped Tripitaka into a woman) and it's preserved character points like Pigsy being gluttonous while Monkey being easy-going but strong in a fight. I'll guess that turning the pious Buddhist priest Tripitaka into a token lecherous boy was a deliberate joke.
The storyline holds together (slightly) better than you'd think. The sex android brothel is relevant because androids are machines, so our heroines can "repair" them. (This involves a magical girl transformation sequence into a topless maid outfit. Maybe they're also parodying magical girl anime?) The sex scenes get boring and you'll fast-forward through them, but the big nude action/chase sequence involving Monkey and an android is well animated, imaginative and a lot of fun. These androids can smash through walls and transform their limbs into tentacles.
The show looks great. The animation style's a bit retro, but in a jolly way that's full of life and character. It's a lot of fun to watch.
Is it good? Er... that's a big word. Would I recommend it? Not particularly, but it's happy, good-natured and even arguably has emotional underpinning from the exploited androids. One got beaten to death as a senseless "reward" for sex... and afterwards the android's remains were still asking "was it good for you?" Mostly, though, this hentai is simply cheerful and crazed. It's cramming too much into 35 minutes and it's liable to seem incoherent (at least on first viewing), but there are worse crimes. If nothing else, you'll learn that female sex androids apparently have penises. The episode's goal is basically just to be a laugh, at which it succeeds.
