Hikiko san vs Kokkuri san
I enjoyed it and it's interesting, but its first half hour suggests that this director doesn't understand how to use cameras.
A girl (Asaoka Megumi) is being bullied at school. (It's a Hikiko-san film, so that's almost expected.) This is unpleasantly effective and the bullies are indeed hateful bitch queens, but the camerawork's clueless and the editor doesn't understand how to edit together shots for emotional effect. 1. When Megumi's considering suicide by jumping into a river, the camera's often plonked on the other side of the river and so far away that we can hardly see her. 2. There's a scene where Megumi's getting kicked but the director hasn't realised how hard it is to kick someone convincingly without actually kicking them. His shot choices make this regrettably obvious. 3. A spooky ghoul woman appearing at a window or approaching someone just makes the bemused viewer go "who"? It's so far away from "scary" that it's like the horror equivalent of "unfunny" in comedy.
You'll definitely hate those bullies, though. Here's their introduction.
BULLY (deliberately knocking her lipstick off the desk) = "Asaoka-san. Pick it up."
(Megumi obeys.)
BULLY = "Who said you could touch it with your bare hands? Who gave you permission?"
MEGUMI = "Nobod--"
BULLY (interrupting) = "I can't hear you."
MEGUMI = "Nob--"
BULLY (even faster) = "I can't hear you."
MEGUMI = "Nobody. I'm sorry."
BULLY = "You should apologise when you do something wrong! What a vulgar commoner. Ahhhh, it's been fouled. I don't need it any more. Pick it up if you want it. You'd never be able to afford it."
(They all look at Megumi, who eventually obeys the order.)
BULLIES = "She took it! Ew... That's poor people for you. How disgusting."
Megumi has three friends who'd like to help, but can't resist the bully clique. One of them (Saori) is played by Mami Sakamoto, who I think is porn star Haruki Satou. I can't see any proof of this online, but their ages match and the non-porn one here only made two films, both straight-to-video. (The other one's The Abashiri Family and it's far worse than this.) Don't confuse either of them with a Mami Sakamoto who briefly did some voice acting in 2012. LATER UPDATE AFTER GOOGLING: she isn't even this film's only hardcore porn star. There's also Kokona Yuzuki.
Anyway, the film's first half-hour is fine. Badly made, but watchable. The actors are okay, which is my main worry in a Hisaaki Nagaoka film. Thereafter, though, things go crazy. Megumi summons Kokkuri-san with thunder and lightning... in her bedroom. Don't ask me how that indoors weather works, but it's intense and the best scene in the film. (She's cutting herself with a blade and writing a Kokkuri-summoning board in her own blood. With close-ups, ewwww.) Later, the film will have THREE weird scary supernatural women at war with each other, when we'd only expected two. The explanation for number three is quite good. It's also disgusting and satisfying when the bullies meet their just deserts.
The Kokkuri-san prosthetics have a visible edge in one shot, but otherwise work. Hikiko-san is extremely bad news and there's some subtle misdirection with her lore (i.e. she comes when it's raining). She drags people, which is the key point. (After all, the most natural way to interpret her name if it hadn't been written down would be "the girl who drags you", although her full name of Mori Hikiko might in principle suggest a link with "hikikomori", i.e. shut-ins who never go outdoors.)
That second half was highly entertaining. I enjoyed it. It goes crazy in good ways and even occasionally gets creepy, e.g. the hands on the window from Hikiko's servants. I laughed when an eyeball fell out of Saori's mouth. This film is cheap, shoddy, badly made straight-to-video nonsense... but it's also fun.
