Toshi Densetsu Monogatari Hikiko
Sometimes, it's unintentionally hilarious. It's a Japanese all-CGI short film that's trying to be horror. It's actually quite effective at being depressing, dour, etc. but its CGI was unimpressive even in 2008 and any terrified facial expressions will be the funniest thing you've seen all week. Another comedy highlight is anyone running. Mind you, it looks better than the Doctor Who TV animations from around the same time (The Infinite Quest, Dreamland).
The visuals achieve their primary goal, though, i.e. making you gloomy and miserable. Hikiko-san looks perfect, including a limp that makes her bad at running.
The storyline is dark, nasty and horrible. There's bullying in the classroom. This is common in Hikiko-san films and it's a downer every time. Those two boys tying a kitten to the back of a car? Die, please. Worst of all is the teacher who can see it happening in front of him and doesn't, for instance, punish the entire class to hammer the point home. He approves. He thinks the victims of bullying are a necessary part of society and that there's no point in saving them because the bullies will just move on to the next in the queue.
"I don't think there's anyone more suitable for being bullied than that girl. Just between us, sometimes she gives an adult like me the creeps."
"Teacher!"
"Yeah, yeah. Don't worry, I won't go saying that in front of the children."
If you feel like something twisted and you don't mind terrible CGI, by all means try this. Don't expect to enjoy it, though. It's absolutely no fun. A mother says to her young daughter's face that she wishes she'd never given birth to her. There's a bleak twist at the end. Frankly, the most likeable, dynamic character here might be the ghost who drags people to death.
