Fuguushoku Kanteishi ga Jitsu wa Saikyou Datta
There's no significant difference between this and Bogus Skill "Fruitmaster". They both aired in the Jan-Mar 2023 anime season, this on Mondays and the other on Saturdays. Both are you'd-think-it-was-isekai fantasies about a protagonist whose unearned and apparently weak magic skill makes him THE STRONGEST!!!, so he'll win fights and be surrounded by girls with big boobs. (The shows are cut from such similar cloth that they both have a steam-censored public bath scene in episode 5.) I quite enjoyed them, though, and that's not really even trash-diving. I genuinely prefer both to, say, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which has 100-odd episodes, four TV seasons and two movies. What I saw of that was so dedicated to its power wank that it didn't function as a narrative.
These shows certainly aren't great, mind you, but they're watchable and nice.
This one's more distinctive at the start, but in a way that repelled viewers. It takes effort to stick with the protagonist (Ein). People who dislike him have called him useless, boring and pathetic. I'd call him self-pitying and powerless... but that gives him a character journey. He's at the bottom. He's a dogsbody. His party members treat him like a slave, paralyse him and throw him to monsters in order to escape while he's being eaten.
Ein blames this on:
1. AN APPARENTLY USELESS GOD-GIVEN SKILL
"My occupation is the low common 'appraiser'. At birth, the Goddess of Light grants us a job, and the Goddess of Darkness grants us skills." (You might remember that the "appraiser" skill created story opportunities in the far better As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World, but this show doesn't do any of that and just lets Ein copy other powers.)
2. HIS SOCIAL CLASS
"The lowliest tier is low common. Peasants and appraisers who aren't fit for battle. Jobs are inherited, so children often carry on their parents' trade. However, since I lost my parents early, I couldn't keep up the family business. So I took the other path open to common tiers and became an adventurer."
Ein attempts suicide, survives and meets unusual people. There's a lovely elf called Yuri who's apparently the world tree (eh?) and her grumpy trainer mother (whatever "mother" means in this context). In episode 2, Ein learns how to shoot a thousand fireballs at once. In episode 3, Mum imbues Ein's hand with the "Infinite Storage" spell. "Just by willing it, you can store infinite physical objects inside this seal."
So, yeah, power incontinence is on full blast. Ditto for pandering to the sad virgin audience, with two girls already wanting to be Ein's wife in episode 3 and bringing up polygamy... although Grumpy Mum wants him to accept a male merchant's marriage proposal. (Ein says no.) Later, we meet Guild Master Meegan (wearing nothing under the jacket that she keeps almost unbuttoned, i.e. cleavage past the sternum) and the mega-boobs of Lady Echidna. None of that means anything. The harem angle is mostly just semi-comedy. This isn't a fanservice series and even the Blu-rays don't have nipples. It's just anime being anime.
That said, though, the show's not entirely fluff. Those heroes who tried to kill Ein are pretty much evil and one of them will turn into a monster that bites off its former friends' heads. Decapitation occasionally happens in this series. When necessary, there's a respectable danger level. There's also some mildly odd worldbuilding, e.g. Ein wants to help Yuri travel the world and meet her sisters. They're other trees. Or offshoot branches of the same tree. Meanwhile... "Every dungeon has a so-called boss monster. Dungeons are living things that consume humans and powering them is a beating heart."
Personally, I quite enjoyed this show... but it's true that Ein starts out fatalistic and passive, letting himself be exploited and thinking it inevitable given his social class and lowly "appraiser" skill. Life improves and the show charges back to genre-normal, but don't expect memorable characterisation or ambitious storytelling. It's fun. Nothing more. Bog-standard anime. Potentially worth a watch if you don't feel like anything challenging.
