Bijo no Harawata
It's a load of bollocks. Also, it's stomach-turning and its lead actress can't act.
Yakuza are conning women out of enormous sums of money, then selling the women to Africa. When their latest victim's sister tries to investigate, they gang-rape her and inject her with drugs. She escapes and kills herself in front of a psychiatrist (Hiromi) who similarly tries to investigate. Guess what happens to her.
This film is full of sex scenes, usually gang rapes, and the few that aren't are still unpleasant and creepy. It's as erotic as roadkill. None of these actresses had an acting career, which is particularly unsurprising with our heroine, Hiromi. Look at her reaction to witnessing suicide, for instance. Good grief. She'll be passable later as a sort of blank revenge protagonist, but that's the masking effect of a non-actress's performance that isn't projecting anything. The main job of this film's actresses was to get naked in rape scenes and get their hands on dicks. (The film includes shots that have been fogged for the sake of Japanese censorship laws.)
It is, though, successfully repellent. The yakuza are violent bastards even to each other. One gets tortured by his friends, then killed with guns and swords until he's a pile of disembodied pieces of meat. (When being masturbated, he said, "That feels good, mummy.") When another yakuza phones his boss with bad news, he's ordered to shut up and never mention that again. Hitomi hypnotises someone into trying to stab his friends to death, while a gangster's moll gets sexually aroused by witnessing rape.
After that, things get silly.
Japan's a bit hysterical about drugs and this film sometimes feels like one of those 1930s exploitation films like Reefer Madness. Taking drugs will make you: (a) jump off a building, (b) suck a yakuza's dick, or (c) transform into the Toxic Avenger. What the hell is that creature? Zombie? Halloween costume? Damned if I know. I'm pretty sure someone would have realised if drugs were turning people into things like that, though. The film's silliest scene is when this (female) Toxic Avenger Zombie grows a penis with a toothy mouth like one of H.R. Giger's Aliens. The moll gets her mouth around that (eh?) and the rip-off is extended with an Aliens chestbuster scene. James Cameron's Aliens came out two years earlier.
Toxic Avenger Zombie also kills someone by sitting on his face and sliming him.
I fast-forwarded through the sex scenes. Ewwww. I can't imagine wanting to watch those. The film's good at portraying vile people doing horrible things, but bad at anything involving female characters. They investigate rapist slave-dealing yakuza on their own without contacting the authorities or planning for the possibility of something happening to them. They don't leave a message with a friend. They don't contact professionals. After that, the last act's daft and would have been unwittingly hilarious had the rest of the film not been so gruelling. Don't even consider watching this one.
