It's by Yumi Yoshiyuki, a writer, director and actress who's best known for pink films although she also studied economics at Dokkyo University. She began as an actress in 1993 and has won awards in all three of her disciplines, although admittedly most of those were from the Pink Grand Prix of the Japanese pink film industry. Not all her work's sleazy, though. She's also done straight films (e.g. Ju-on: The Grudge).
This particular film is pink, but it's also surprisingly respectable. (In the sense of being good, anyway. You couldn't deny that it's indecent.) It has a narrative with characters, emotional stakes and decent performances, albeit also nudity from hardcore porn stars. It's quite good.
It's magical realism. A cat called Purin becomes a human girl called Rinko. She meets a shy photographer called Kenta... but the film's also interested in Kenta's parents and girlfriend. Relationship problems are everywhere and the film takes them seriously. The parents might divorce, while the girlfriend will spring unfortunate surprises and spoil a birthday celebration.
Our sexy cat-girl changes their lives... but then ultimately becomes a cat again. Her human identity seems gone for good. She wasn't interested in stealing Kenta and she's nice to the girlfriend.
The performances are fine. The film's a lot better acted than Yumi Yoshiyuki's other 2021 pink film about a cat turning into a sexy girl. (The other is called
Ecstasy Cat Lisa and it's more memorable in its own way, but this is better, subtler filmmaking.) The awkward, slightly ugly actor Yoshiyuki chose for Kenta is an interesting casting choice that I rather like, although he hasn't had much of a career in acting. The ending isn't sombre, but it's also not what I'd expected. Not everyone will agree with my judgement in calling this movie "good", but I'd definitely put it within shouting distance of that and it's also surprisingly human and likeable.
