Dead or Zombie
I expect it's an hour-long TV special (including adverts), because it's only 42 minutes long and imdb hasn't heard of it. It's also mildly heartwarming. I told Misaki about it and she agreed that it sounded nice.
It starts with mum, granny and two children singing "happy birthday". Jump forward about thirteen years and the family's less happy. Saki lives in her bedroom and hardly ever emerges, not even to go outside or to school. She draws zombies. Mum asks her to come downstairs for a double birthday lunch (Saki and granny), but granny's senile and tells Saki to go away, while Dad (who's usually not at home) gives his mobile phone all his attention. He bitches about the fact that Saki's a hikikomori, but doesn't even try to do anything to help and just leaves it all to mum.
Remember those zombies, though? They're real. The family dynamic is about to change drastically.
Next thing we know, Saki's exploring outside. (This isn't a horror film, though. If had been, they wouldn't have missed a huge chance to scare us with the zombie assault and with Saki's first attempts at venturing out.) She's relaxed about the undead, who aren't always even hostile. They'll sort of vaguely realise you're there. They might bump into you, then fall down. One might perhaps try to follow you if you annoy it, but Saki's not too bothered about that either. She takes the last remaining bits of food from empty convenience stores, making us worry about her long-term survival options.
She also collects pieces of human flesh from the ground. She's caring for her family, you see. They're undead, but she's living with them anyway. They're in the (heh) living room, separated from Saki's part of the apartment only by a kitchen counter, some chairs and a propped-up piece of board. If they were serious about eating her, they could easily have done so... but they're just shambling around, making the odd half-hearted grab at her from time to time. Her father and brother seem more dangerous than her mother and grandmother, but it's even possible that they've realised she's feeding them and looking after them.
The US Army is here. They offer to take Saki to a base, but she refuses. "My family, my family. Stay home." They shrug and leave her to it.
"Who gives a shit about what happens here in Japan?"
Obviously, this isn't a stable situation. Not even medium-term. Saki won't avoid trouble forever with the other zombies, so what will Saki's family do then? Join in with the feast, or try to protect her? As Misaki said, the answer to this is nice... but in a chompy way. Death has improved them as people. (They're also zombies who want to eat you, but hey.) Saki has similarly grown up, no longer hiding from the world and instead taking responsibility for her family, regularly going outside and providing for everyone. It won't be like that forever, but I'm optimistic for her future. (Besides, this zombie apocalypse seems relatively mild, given their low levels of aggression. There are probably other Sakis. Mixed families who've found an equilibrium, at least temporarily. It would be nice to think that, anyway.)
