Tomoko didn't like the only episode she saw of this. I thought it was okay and watched the rest of the series (which is quite highly regarded), but I wouldn't rate it higher than "a laugh". I enjoyed it, though.
As a work of animation, it's glorious. More conventional than I'd expected from its studio (Science Saru), but still loose, energetic, well-acted and capable of glorious action sequences. The giant crab monster battle/chase in ep.4 was my favourite. Apparently, the weekly manga's so well drawn that people compare it with monthly series, while the anime lives up to that while also being fluid, alive and explosive. The face acting's great too.
Ultimately, though, it's a shounen fighting manga. Aliens and youkai appear and they're bad. Well, usually. Also they're also liable to have sympathetic backstories from when they were alive, with Acrobatic Silky's being the most shocking. What will our heroes do? FIGHT THEM!, of course. Also, our two main heroes (Momo and Okarun) are teenage idiots with an infinite capacity for misunderstandings, goofy assumptions and making a mess of their love life. Okarun is the very definition of an otaku virgin with self-esteem issues and zero experience of friends, let alone girlfriends. Momo (a loud gyaru) is more socially competent, but still a fair-sized freak and doesn't always overlap well with Okarun.
They're not boyfriend and girlfriend... yet. It'll happen, though. Obviously, inevitably. Here, though, they're still idiots tying themselves in knots and... oh, for goodness' sake, you two, grow some brains.
The show's quite funny. Shiratori (pink-haired girl) is a delusional narcissist who thinks she's the Chosen One and can't be shaken out of wrong beliefs. Jiji (Momo's childhood friend) is a motormouth goofball who can't say three sentences without sounding ridiculous. Also, the show's crude. Okarun's penis and testicles go walkabout and become significant plot points. At different times. He's still missing one testicle at the end of the season (while Momo thinks it's hilarious and I loved her laughing fit in ep.5). There are aliens and yokai that want to steal human genitals and/or possibly commit rape (although the latter is unsuccessful). Okarun's naked throughout ep.9, although the fanservice involving girls stops at "harmless underwear".
The season ends on a cliffhanger, or that might be an understatement. It won't occur to you that ep.13 isn't waiting there already to be watched straight after ep.12... but no. We've got to wait for Season 2.
The show's good fun. It's not deep or challenging, but it has plenty of Easter Eggs for anyone who's into aliens, youkai and general forteana. Look out for an unusual explanation of alien cattle abductions. Yes, that's a thing in UFO lore. The youkai references tend to be obscure, but they're real too. The animation's top-drawer, the characters are likeable and the tone is bold and off-the-wall. The show's not afraid to knock around its female characters (which Tomoko disliked in ep.1), but the series has quite a big female fanbase because of its interesting female characters who are just as important and badass as the boys. Meanwhile, the Momo-Okarun romance is sweet, albeit often frustrating because they're idiots.
It's mental, absurd, crude and funny. I wouldn't call it a must-watch, but it's pretty good TV.
