It's another anime that comes from the amateur write-your-own-novel website Shousetsuka ni Narou. It's not an isekai, but the difference is on the level of "alligator vs. crocodile". Light is the LOWLY PROTAGONIST!!! who's going to get an AMAZING POWER!!! that makes him THE STRONGEST!!!. This will be completely unearned. He didn't lift a finger to get it. In this world, people eat a special fruit and get a random super-ability (like
One Piece). Eating multiple fruit is suicide (again, like
One Piece)... except that Light's skill is "Fruitmaster". Hence the show's title.
The show also likes boobs. Episode 5 has a bath scene with censor steam that might make you expect nipples and uncensored Blu-rays... but no. Despite temporary appearances, this isn't that kind of show.
I quite liked the series, though. It could definitely have been worse. The show's not obsessed with Light's power levels, with for instance his childhood friend Lena being co-protagonist with her own story arcs. Lena's episodes might not have Light at all. Also, the main enemy is someone you can't defeat with mere strength. The corrupt church controls everything and the people in power use Skilled people for their own ends. The Holy Sister orders Lena to become an adventurer, move to the holy city and join a party of scumbags, then takes it badly when Lena finds the courage to quit.
"The Holy Sister is summoning you. She'd like to talk to you about you leaving Sacred."
"No matter how many times you ask, my answer is the same. I won't meet with her."
The Holy Sister gets our heroes barred from good jobs and restricted to grotty, low-paid ones. When they make a success of this, she tries to disband their party. "The official inquiry is going to erase all records. As of this day, all party records of Luxeria will be erased."
She then changes tack and gives them a top-level quest, expecting no survivors beyond Lena. I quite enjoyed all this. Our heroes are likeable. Their enemies are heavyweight, e.g. a necromancer with an army of zombies, but the show might blur the line between enemy and ally. The episodes work as meaningful adventure, with baddies who give our heroes a proper challenge and a reason for Light to be cautious about eating too many fruit. (Skills might clash with each other and have unpredictable side-effects.) The season ends with "And the adventure will continue!" rather than a big conclusion, but that's fine. I'd watch a second season if they made one.
I like the theme songs too.
