Young Wife Erotic Experience Strange Daydream
That was extremely weird. The subtitle "A Strange Daydream" describes it well. Initially, it's normal and even nice. Marika's been married for a year and is still more than keen to enjoy the physical side of their relationship. She urges her husband to continue intercourse after ejaculation, even though he says that's beyond him. She'll kneel down and unzip him after breakfast, even though he needs to leave for work in a minute. The first thing we see her do is check a pregnancy test.
Yes, it's a pink film. That's usually true with Daisuke Yamanouchi, at least to some degree.
Things are already getting a bit weird. That post-breakfast fellatio scene features a large sausage. No, literally. That's "sausage" as in the food item, like any other you'd keep in the fridge. Later, she got another sausage (the same one?) and to my shock used a potato peeler on it. I anticipated horror, but no. She's making a realistically shaped dildo for immediate use. Afterwards, she's asleep on the sofa and things get twenty times weirder when Tanaka lets himself into the house. "Who's Tanaka?" I hear you ask. That's also Marika's reaction, but Tanaka insists that they met in Sendai exactly a year ago and shows a photo of them together.
Despite Tanaka's confident assertions, the photo doesn't show Marika. That's a photo of hardcore porn star Kyoko Maki. Marika points this out (as you would), but Tanaka won't listen and keeps adding details to substantiate his story. "He's gaslighting her," I thought, but then Marika finds that her own photos at home similarly feature Kyoko Maki instead of herself.
Suddenly, Marika's being played by Kyoko Maki instead of the original actress. There's been a magical cast swap. What the hell?
I'm amazed that Daisuke Yamanouchi was capable of writing this film. I couldn't have. I think he was inspired by a dream, because I can't see any other explanation for this film's reflecting narrative, corkscrew reality and mind-bending set-pieces. Russian matryoshka dolls get quiet emphasis, e.g. the one on Tanaka's "how the hell did he get that?" keyring that also has Marika's house key on it. There will eventually be three Marika actresses, including a scene where one sees the other two fellating food items in front of her. There will be narrative loops, in which the latest Marika repeats actions we've already seen from her predecessor(s). Is Marika's husband cheating on her? Yes, he is. But, simultaneously, no, he isn't and that would have been physically impossible. Will there be a romantic happy ending, including pregnancy? Yes, but don't ask me where it came from.
Many films claim to explore dreams, but this goes further than most. I don't think it's possible to decide what really happened. It feels as if Daisuke Yamanouchi woke up from a semi-nightmare, immediately scribbled it down at top speed and then filmed the movie screenplay pretty much as it was. It might have been a wet dream, given all the flesh on display, but that's normal for him and a shame because this film won't often be watched for its artistic qualities. I'd recommend it. It's slow, domestic and confusing, but intriguing.
